Madrid February 21st 2006- Mad Magazine Spain, was scheduled to launch its first issue ever on April 4, but that date was canned, along with the first cover. The reason you might ask? The tragic shooting of Alessandra Rubi Streignard Villarreal. The Magazine's EOC felt the cover was too insensitive to distribute due to recent events.
MAD Spain did not get off that easily, a disgruntled employee felt that the magazine was very insensitive in the way they handled the cover, so this certain employee sent a snippet to Telecinco in Madrid, the snippet was aired on TV this evening, along with an alleged explanation of how the magazine portrayed Streignard Villarreal on the cover.
Allegedly, the cover featured a baby standing in front of Alessandra saying, (translated from Spanish) "This just in, you are now too fat for a moo-moo"
On the back of the baby's shirt was written April Fools'. MAD Magazine Spain later told Telecinco that the cover was "just an April Fools' joke, we planned on doing a feature story on Alessandra Rubi, and we wanted a funny cover to go with it. If you think about it, the joke makes sense, someone like Alessandra who has struggled with her weight very publicly would probably be devastated if someone called her fat. We know she's not fat, she's very attractive, but we needed something funny on the cover. I think we captured her very beautifully, our artists used a photo of Alessandra as a reference, very natural, with no make up, and no hair dye. Aside from being very beautiful, we think she is a very funny and witty woman."
I think the drawing is almost what she looks like, except her nose is all wrong, and her face is not that thin, but in a good way, she kind of has a plump supple face.
